Happenings at Montecito

Montecito Community School

Library in a Box

600 students recieved 12,000 books!!

Montecito believes that all children deserve and need to have many books of their very own. Having books means they will become good readers and will also love to read. The goal of the Library in a Box project is to provide every student in the school with twenty books that they choose and may keep, along with a stackable box.

Last year, we had three book distributions --600 students received 12,00 books! We also gave out over 400 book boxes. This year we hope to have our first distribution in January. We plan to give every student twenty more books, and a box to students who did not receive one last year.

Montecito's Spring Carnival

One of Montecito's brave teachers face the Dunk Tank!

Montecito held it's Spring carnival and it was a great time!! Thanks to our Home Liaison Sylvia Ramirez , our PTO president Mark Dora, and Community in Schools representative Stephanie Ewerte for all of the time and effort they put into making sure it was a Huge Success!!

Snakes!!!

First Graders handling Snakes

Montecito first graders were fortunate enough to have a visit from snake expert Clint Miller after finishing a unit on reptiles and amphibians. Mr. Miller brought several different reptiles with him including a diamondback rattlesnake and a Gila monster. Each child was allowed to get an up close look at a gopher snake.

OUR GARDEN
OUR POND

A view of our pond!

Exciting things are happening in the Montecito courtyard! Our pond has just been introduced to Goldfish, Hoi and Mosquito fish. The Mosquito fish were used in the fifth grade science unit about ecosystems, so we had our own source. Several classes have planted in the garden, and it is even more successful then it was last year! When looking at our garden through our hallway windows you can see a lush area of vegetables and flowers. Plans are being made to begin the next phase of our outdoor learning lab, and we hope to have many desert trees and shrubs installed by spring.
Beautiful Sunflowers in our garden
Butterflies are Free!!

Beautiful Butterflies are set free by 2nd Grade Scientists

Montecito 2nd graders just finished a 2 month long unit on butterflies. After studying the lifecycle of the butterfly each class released their butterflies outside in our schools courtyard.
Baby Chicks!!!
Montecito Kindergartener's spent some time studying animals that hatch from eggs. At the end of their unit they had "classroom eggs" in incubators that produced these adorable chicks!!
